Add these to your decks. Timeless Wisdom . Zetalpa gives us a whopping five keywords by itself, including the highly important indestructible and double strike. Plus, giving flying and trample out via Kathril when this is in the graveyard is a great outcome as well. Abzan Ascendancy is for the +1/+1 counter deck, and this is a totally separate theme. Having mana-fixing lands that enter untapped is important, and Symbiotic Swarm offers some good ones such as Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, and Caves of Koilos, but not as many as I'd hope. Learn about the most powerful format that spans Magic's entire history. My priority is creatures that add strong abilities like indestructible as well as creatures that help fill the graveyard for Kathril. Boardwipes, card draw, and ramp are all essentials for any commander deck. The Nitpicking Nerds – Symbiotic Swarm Precon: $50 Budget Upgrade | Precon Power-Up April 7, 2020 by Community Spotlight Welcome to another installment of Precon Power-Up! Let's check out the preconstructed list: Out of the box, Symbiotic Swarm is a solid creature-focused deck that does a good job supporting both Graveyard and Keyword strategies. Kathril then gets a +1/+1 counter for each keyword counter you put on a creature with its ability, up to a whopping 11 +1/+1 counters! Cartographer’s Hawk may provide flying, but I needed a slot for a stronger accelerator. And here are the cards I'll cut for the upgrades: Finally, here's Symbiotic Swarm with the $20 upgrades installed: $200 Symbiotic Swarm Upgrade. All emails include an unsubscribe link. See our privacy policy. Woodland Cemetery ($3.95) and Isolated Chapel ($3.99). The precon excels at pressuring the table with hard to kill threats and repeatedly reanimating them if they manage to be dealt with. It's clear that Symbiotic Swarm is a Keyword Soup deck that uses its graveyard to help fuel its Keyword strategy and give it lategame punching power. Eventually, the deck wins by overloading our army with powerful keywords (Odric, Lunarch Marshal) or animating a giant beater to smash face with (Zetalpa, Primal Dawn). I added the two that make black because I think that should be our biggest focus. I recognize that $50 means a different amount to everyone – for some it’s a little, for some it’s a lot – but given its proximity to the cost of the decks, I find it’s a pretty good amount. We need more here, however, and the precon's high amount of graveyard recursion doesn't change that fact. Building FNM-worthy decks without breaking the bank. That said, the card is great. Luckily, I’m not adding too many non-creatures, so we should be able to cruise into the land section with something left. Once we've reached the lategame and got our graveyard filled, the deck's high amount of graveyard recursion is what lets it grind out the other precons. But then there's subpar Commander's Sphere, the terrible Bonder's Ornament, and the completely out of place Cartographer's Hawk. We have a thematic option with Karametra, God of Harvests, which comes with the indestructible keyword, along with staples like Sakura-Tribe Elder and Sol Ring. Obviously I’m pulling those prices from this very website, ChannelFireball.com, as I write. Skull Prophet ($0.25) and Sylvan Caryatid ($6.99). Weekly drafts featuring a variety of formats new and old. Commander 2020 preconstructed decks have arrived, and that means it's time for another round of my $20 precon upgrade series! 6 Targeted Removal. Half our budget went into our lands, making sure we have consistent mana each game. Out go the tap-lands that gain a life, as well as Sungrass Prairie, which does nothing by itself. Netherborn Altar is such a dangerous card, and without some more serious lifegain, I’m hesitant to slot it into this deck. Four-player Commander battles featuring a new theme every week. There's a lot of great cards here, but at least two that I'd cut. Cartographer's Hawk is a horrible inclusion in the deck, clashing with your superior Green land ramp and generally being subpar at best. Symbiotic Swarm is a 100 card Commander preconstructed deck with a counters theme, featured in Commander 2020.12 1 Description 2 Decklist 3 New cards 4 New art 5 Double-faced tokens and punch cards 6 References Symbiotic Swarm is Abzan () colored. Welcome to another installment of Precon Power-Up! To be fair, the deck naturally thrives in the lategame, and dropping down Akroma, Angel of Wrath or Zetalpa, Primal Dawn on their own sort of fits what I'm looking for, but having a more consistent win condition would be nice. Standard, Casual, Tournament, Vintage, Legacy, EDH, Draft. That said, adding tutors helps make the deck more consistent and flexible, so we should add some if able. C20 - Symbiotic Swarm Deck Upgrade Today, we dive into the Abzan/Indatha (White-Black-Green) keyword counters Commander 2020 deck, helmed by Kathril, Aspect Warper. We are taking a look at the spells and upgrading this preconstructed deck with a budget of only $50. Three down, two to go – stay tuned for the next one. 1 Explore 6. That budget doesn’t include tax or shipping, and it uses ChannelFireball.com singles prices, of course. To tune Symbiotic Swarm into a more powerful, focused Keyword Graveyard deck we're going to make the following swaps: That's what we want to add to the deck. WBG for instant-speed Vindicate is an easy sell. The next best way to put our keyword soup creatures are self-mill cards like Satyr Wayfinder, Deadbridge Chant, or The Binding of the Titans, but while they're good at worth running they're significantly less important than our graveyard tutors. This time I'm taking it a step further by not only offering the usual $20 upgrade but also a $200 upgrade list as well! Bontu also makes a great sacrifice outlet for creatures you’d rather have in the graveyard, such as the dredgers I just mentioned. Here are the first cards I'd add on a $20 budget: And here are the cards I'll cut for the upgrades: Finally, here's Symbiotic Swarm with the $20 upgrades installed: The $200 upgrade follows the same philosophy as the $20 upgrade: focus on getting all the keywords into our graveyard as quickly as possible. Collection changes and deck creation/edits in the last 24 hours are affected. It’s nice that they’re all so affordable. Given that we’re in this color combination, it’s easy to upgrade Blood Curdle into this. We could expand this a bit but it's a good start. Arcane Maelstrom . The goal is to throw those creatures into the graveyard and then cast Kathril to get a nice pile of counters, both ability and +1/+1. Now that I have the Commander 2020 decks in my hands, I’m even more excited about my Budget Precon Upgrades series, so here’s the third installment! Seriously, the Hawk is a pretty bad ramp card in general that might make the cut in some non-Green decks, by why in the world would a Green deck with land ramp run it? The best cards to do this are graveyard tutors like Buried Alive, Corpse Connoisseur, and Jarad's Orders, which let us search our library for the creatures and put them directly into our graveyard. Some aren’t quite as strong. Two great mana accelerators with separate upside. That wraps up the C20 series! We’re taking a look at the Commander 2020 preconstructed deck, Symbiotic Swarm, and you can expect some graveyard shenanigans, tons of creatures, and probably a hefty amount of value in this deck. The $200 upgrade follows the same philosophy as the $20 upgrade: focus on getting all the keywords into our graveyard as quickly as possible. Now that we've checked out the general ratios, let's take a closer look at the cards we're working with: 38 Lands. They do a better job setting up our mass reanimation spells like Living Death and Eerie Ultimatum, however, which is a solid Plan B in our deck in case Kathril gets shut down, letting us take all the creatures we dumped into our graveyard over the course of the game and put them directly on to the battlefield. I Agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Faceless Menace is a 100 card Commander preconstructed deck with a Morph theme, featured in Commander 2019. Entomb on a stick! As I often explain in my Budget Commander articles, every time I build a rough draft of a deck, I make sure I have a certain ratio of mana, interaction, card advantage, etc. Cataclysmic Gearhulk, Kalemne's Captain, and Sunblast Angel are all thematic options, but they're also a bit clunky to use. Tomer shows you how to tune Enhanced Evolution into a focused, powerful Mutate deck that fixes the precon's weaknesses while building upon its strengths! As a small subtheme, we’ll also be looking to reanimate some of those creatures. 1 Farseek 7. Let’s start by talking about the creatures I cut: Most of the creatures from the initial decklist play quite well with Kathril by adding key abilities. We then use our nigh-unstoppable commander to one-shot our opponents with commander damage. We also now have a second better Swiftfoot Boots with Lightning Greaves, making the 1-shot potential with Kathril even easier. Highlighting the Pauper format where only Commons are allowed. Stinkweed Imp ($0.99), Golgari Thug ($2.49), and Golgari Grave-Troll ($1.79). I keep adding this card to green decks as a huge card draw spell, and I’m starting to get tired of it. You could distribute these keyword counters across multiple creatures, but usually the best approach will be loading Kathril up with most of the keywords and start killing opponents with your enormous, unstoppable commander. Our goal with our keyword soup creatures is to cover all eleven keywords with the least amount of creatures needed to do so. Kathril, Aspect Warper is the face of Symbiotic Swarm and is the best representative of what the deck wants to do: fill your graveyard up with creatures that are loaded with useful keywords, then use your graveyard to pump up your army. Does it have a name? ChannelFireball - Magic: The Gathering Strategy, Singles, Cards, Decks. Some aren’t quite as strong. There's a few good utility lands here as well, with Krosan Verge ramping, Gavony Township adding counters to our creatures, and Nesting Grounds being a sweet new way to transfer counters from one permanent to another. The deck runs plenty of creatures that are loaded with keywords (Vampire Nighthawk) or grant keyword counters (Void Beckoner), by casting them or milling them into our graveyard (Satyr Wayfinder). I'm finally free to explore other stuff! Kalemne’s Captain is better in a +1/+1 counter themed deck, so it gets cut here. The best keyword soup creatures then are the ones that have multiple desirable keywords, with the best being indestructible, hexproof, and double strike since those benefit Kathril the most. Apologies in advance for the mild inconsistency depending on when you read this, but I think the point remains (the point being that you can build a fun deck that can win in non-competitive Commander without spending all your money.). As I make these upgrades, I try to keep the creature/noncreature/land balance close to the balance in the original decklist. This gives me a reference point to compare to the deck and see which areas may need improvement. Does that sound fair? Indestructible plus a second ability makes these great creatures for Kathril’s trigger, and they’ll even be able to attack sometimes when they’re on the battlefield. I didn't find anything in the precon that can end the game with little setup. Just hang onto those counters until a worthy successor comes along, dump them all onto that creature, and enjoy the efficiency. It’s so sad when creatures with lots of counters die – those counters often go to waste. $20 Malcolm & Breeches Combo! Dredge is a great way to fill up the graveyard, and these are my go-to dredgers. Creatures. 1 Graveyard Hate. Enhanced Evolution . Eric Levine, also known as RagingLevine, is an accomplished Magic Judge, having head judged many Grand Prix events as well as the Mythic Championship. I like the idea of leaning hard on creatures that can wipe the board since our deck has so much creature synergy. There's also a decent amount of overlap between these two themes, with at least 8 cards that care about both keywords and your graveyard. We've updated our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. 9 Graveyard Recursion. The Impetus cycle really doesn’t speak to me the more I look at it – I just keep cutting them to focus on my theme, and I feel good about that. These sorceries do exactly that and hel… The slimmer our keyword soup package the better, since these cards are subpar if we see them anywhere outside our graveyard and too many of them would only clog up our deck and make it unplayable. The Morph mechanic includes its Manifest and Megamorph variants. Despark is one of my all-time favorite budget removal options, Abzan Charm can draw cards if we don't need to remove a creature, and Acidic Slime comes with the deathtouch keyword. As we go on, I’ll list the prices of cards I intend to add to the deck in order to show you how I kept the budget under $50. The first part of this plan is our keyword soup creatures that will fuel Kathril from the graveyard. None of the precons come with any nonland tutors, which makes sense since this is an introductory product and new players who are unfamiliar with the deck wouldn't know what cards they should be searching for with tutors. Avoid this terrible situation by investing in an Ozolith today. Here are the new Standard Challenger Decks for 2021! It fills it up when it enters and when it dies, so you’ll be excited to chump block with this one in the early game. I also came across this excellent spreadsheet that does a lot of the work for you, so thank you, Reddit user /u/Elektrophorus!. The deck is probably better off just running generic board wipes, or at least better creatures that can wipe the board. Here’s the premise: I take each preconstructed deck and make an improvement to it on a $50 budget. As I make these upgrades, I try to keep the creature/noncreature/land balance close to the balance in the original decklist. To put our keyword soup creatures quickly into our graveyard, we're running a combination of self-mill (Perpetual Timepiece) and tutoring (Jarad's Orders). I'll show you how to tune Symbiotic Swarm into a more focused Keyword Graveyard deck, removing cards that don't fit our theme and adding more cards that do. The prices may have changed as of the publication of this article, which means the overall cost might be lower or higher, and some cards may be out of stock now. The deck, as it comes in the package, has a small +1/+1 counter theme, and while some of those cards survive my update, the overall focus of my plan is on Kathril itself. Symbiotic Swarm Deck List. I'll first go over how each preconstructed deck plays, why you should buy it, and the various directions that you can upgrade the deck to make it your own. Here are my favorite card options to tune Symbiotic Swarm into a more focused, more powerful Keyword Graveyard deck. This is my upgrade over Unbreakable Bond – two mana to bring something back, even with -1/-0, is worth it, and we can all use another copy of this card. The lands here are pretty good. Symbiotic Swarm has the unfortunate honor of having the least amount of card draw out of all the precons. 1 Harmonize The sorceries included provide some excellent utility for the deck.
